From
Winslow (I-40 exit 252 or 257) take Hwy-87 south to Payson. At Payson, head East
on Hwy-260 to Heber. Just past (East) of Heber, bear left on Hwy-277 and follow
it for about 7 miles to the junction of Hwy 377. Bearing left on Hwy-377,
continue to Holbrook and I-40 exit 285 (westbound) or 286 (eastbound) of I-40.
Or, of course, you can follow the loop in the reverse direction starting at
Holbrook and ending at Winslow. Note: About 54 miles from Winslow in Hwy87 is
the Long Valley connector to the Mogollon Loop Road (4-wheel drive recommended!)
Also known as the General Crook Trail (which, actually is a hiking trail along
the rim and also open to mountain bikers), it overlooks the majesty of the
Coconino Nat'l Forest, below, and is especially spectacular in late September.
The Mogollon Rim road connects with Hwy-260 about 8 miles west of Forest Lakes.

While you are in
Holbrook, you should take a 'side trip' to Canyon
de Chelly. Situated on
Navajo and Hopi Reservation lands, this offers you not only the opportunity to
tour these historic landmarks but to view Native American ceremonial dances and
other tribal events. Also on display are many Native American arts and crafts,
many of which are available for purchase. (For other suggestions on what to do
and
where to go, visit what-where.info.)
Most accommodations are 'booked
up' during the fall leaf viewing season. If you haven't made your hotel/motel reservations yet we
have included access to an on-line hotel reservation system for your convenience.
