LEAF-LOOKERS Guide

Schultz Pass
Leaf-Lookers Guide

This is a great route if you're just traveling through Flagstaff on I-40, want to see the fall leaves but can't take too much time to do it. Schultz Pass is just north of downtown Flagstaff. Once upon a time it used to be considered a shortcut from the east side to down town (avoiding the traffic so they say). Head out on US-180 to the Museum of Northern Arizona (about 2 miles). Just a little bit beyond the museum is FR-420. Turn right and you'll be heading east. This takes you up and over Schultz Pass and all the sights leaf-lookers enjoy and comes out at US-89. Turn right onto 89 and head south back to Flagstaff. The Schultz Pass road (FR-420) is gravel but very well maintained. The entire loop should only take about an hour.

There are many interesting things in and around Flagstaff. For some suggestions, visit what-where.info.)

Most accommodations are 'booked up' during the fall leaf viewing season. If you haven't made your hotel/motel reservations yet we have included access to an on-line hotel reservation system for your convenience.

Hotel reservations are available, usually at a discount, in the following nearby communities:
  • Flagstaff
Northern Arizona's major metropolis; a good place to 'headquarter with excellent access to the favorite leaf-lookers spots. The Flagstaff Days Inn, boasts an indoor (heated) pool yet has rates ranging from the upper 30s and up. Other economical motels featuring indoor pools are Best Value Inn, Crystal Inn, Econo Lodge, Holiday Inn and Sleep Inn. Many also allow small pets. (to bring up only those allowing pets, click on 'Pets Allowed' in the Amenities list when making your reservations.)
  • Sedona
at the mid-point of the 89-A Scenic Route (Flagstaff to Cottonwood) and Southern end of Oak Creek Canyon
  • Williams
30 miles west of Flagstaff on I-40 and at the Southern end of the US-180 access road to Grand Canyon South Rim
  • Winslow
57 miles east of Flagstaff on I-40 and at the Western end of the 87-260-377 loop  (Winslow, along the Mogollon Rim, to Holbrook)
