LEAF-LOOKERS Guide

Volcanoes & Indian Ruins Loop
Leaf-Lookers Guide

Take US-89 north tothe Sunset Crater turnoff (Indian Hwy-395) which should be about 12 miles. Turn right and about 3 miles in is Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument (suggestion: stop at the Interpretive Center). Continue on to the Wupatki National Monument and the Sinagua Indian ruins (suggestion: stop at the interpretive center and prepared to be awed at the ingenuity of this ancient civilization). Then continue on Hwy-395 it will bring you back to US-89. Turn left on US-89 and it is about 22 miles back to Flagstaff. Total driving time (but we do hope you stop at the Interpretive Centers) should be about 2½ hours. This is a beautiful loop for leaf-watching as well as the opportunity to see some interesting attractions.

Most accommodations are 'booked up' during the fall leaf viewing season. If you haven't made your hotel/motel reservations yet we have included access to an on-line hotel reservation system for your convenience.

Hotel reservations are available, usually at a discount, in the following nearby communities:
  • Flagstaff
Northern Arizona's major metropolis; a good place to 'headquarter with excellent access to the favorite leaf-lookers spots. The Flagstaff Days Inn, boasts an indoor (heated) pool yet has rates ranging from the upper 30s and up. Other economical motels featuring indoor pools are Best Value Inn, Crystal Inn, Econo Lodge, Holiday Inn and Sleep Inn. Many also allow small pets. (to bring up only those allowing pets, click on 'Pets Allowed' in the Amenities list when making your reservations.)
  • Sedona
at the mid-point of the 89-A Scenic Route (Flagstaff to Cottonwood) and Southern end of Oak Creek Canyon
  • Williams
30 miles west of Flagstaff on I-40 and at the Southern end of the US-180 access road to Grand Canyon South Rim
  • Winslow
57 miles east of Flagstaff on I-40 and at the Western end of the 87-260-377 loop  (Winslow, along the Mogollon Rim, to Holbrook)
